I know that there’s strong case law support for what Google and Yahoo do with displaying snippets of news stories. Unless the only worthwhile thing Murdoch’s news outlets produce is snippets and headlines, than traffic will be driven to Murdoch’s websites if a person wants the whole story.

I think the key point here is that no other similar company shares this information either. I am not sure if I am ready to jump on the “Google is evil” bandwagon in this scenario. Google’s response to the COPA request a while back shows that the company has reason to keep its data from the government when possible - it needs to protect its precious algorithm.

I don’t think this is the Google Killer. Nonetheless, I am curious why a private company is stepping in when the Bibliotheque Nationale de France (BNF - and sorry I don’t remember where to find my accent marks!) has handed over scanning projects to Google, and also it seems the publicly funded European digitization effort has fallen on hard times. Curious.

Yes! This is awesome. Please do this DOJ!! Why didn’t this happen BEFORE I turned in my paper for the semester. Nevertheless, as the Google Book Settlement is making major changes to copyright practices within the space of a settlement case (read: non-democratic), at least letting these groups sit at the table for negotiations might help make the Google Book Settlement something that could...
